EMINENT Study
Intracerebral hemorrhages are the second most common form of stroke associated with a high mortality and morbidity rate. Despite intensive research, a sufficiently effective treatment is still lacking. Currently, several new medical and surgical treatment options are under investigation, and the Neurovascular Research Cluster as well as the Department of Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Basel play an essential role in this process. The Department of Neurosurgery is initiating, in collaboration with the Department of Neurology and Department of Clinical Research, a randomized controlled trial based on the promising results of a pilot trial and a systematic review and meta-analysis completed by our group, on endoscopic (camera-guided) hematoma removal, the EMINENT-ICH trial. In this trial, we compare endoscopic hematoma evacuation to the current standard of care (medical and intensive care) and investigate the impact on favorable outcomes and survival rates. In order to adapt the study's course to the needs of the patients and to assess patient-relevant outcome measures this study was developed together with patients, caregivers, and patient organization representatives with the support of the Swiss National Foundation. With this study, we aim to show the benefit of early minimal-invasive hematoma removal for the treatment of this devastating disease.
